Lecture: Cynthia Barnett and the Case for a Water Ethic

Blue Revolution

When: Thursday, February 9, 3:30 p.m.
Where: Davis Hall 104

Longtime Florida journalist and author of two books about water issues, including the recently acclaimed Blue Revolution: Unmaking America’s Water Crisis (Beacon Press, 2011), Cynthia Barnett will engage the USFSP community about a key issue in Florida and the U.S., as well as globally.

Americans use more water than any other culture in the world, much to quench what’s now our largest crop—the lawn. Yet most Americans cannot name the river or aquifer that flows to our taps, irrigates our food and produces our electricity. And most don’t realize their freshwater sources are in trouble. Barnett proposes the most important part of the solution
is also the simplest and least expensive: a shared water ethic among citizens, government and major water users.

Part of a lecture series sponsored by the university’s Center for Science and Policy Applications for the Coastal Environment (C-SPACE) and the Florida Studies Program, this event is FREE and open to the public.

Foreign Journalist Visiting Campus

When: Friday, February 3 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Where: Harbor Hall Gallery

Journalists from Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Morocco, Palestinian Territories, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia and Yemen will visit our campus as part of the “Journalism and US Foreign Policy” Program.  The visitors will be accompanied by 4 USDOS Interpreters.

The U.S. Department of State has outlined the following areas of interest for this program:

  • To highlight the significance of a free and independent press to the democratic process
  • To enhance understanding of the U.S. foreign policy decision-making process, with an emphasis on the roles of the State Department and the Department of Defense
  • To examine the influence of media, think tanks, trade associations and grassroots organizations on foreign policy formulation

The journalists will have a round table discussion on Friday, February 3, in the Harbor Hall Gallery, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. About 10 chairs will be reserved for students to observe the discussion and perhaps ask a few questions. This event would be of interest to all students, but particularly to journalism and political science majors.

Deadline approaching for the AP-Google Journalism & Technology Scholarship

Last August, we announced a joint scholarship program for aspiring journalists with the Associated Press, administered by the Online News Association. A total of six $20,000 scholarships will be awarded to undergraduate and graduate journalism students pursuing or planning to pursue degrees at the intersection of journalism, computer science and new media.

Knowing that journalists respect the pressures and motivations of a tight deadline, we want to remind everyone that all applications are due on January 27. That’s just 10 short days away!

The selection committee is looking for applicants with original and exciting ideas for using online tools and new technology to move digital journalism forward. We’re looking for students who love great reporting and value the importance of a strong press, and who can articulate creative and forward-thinking ways of using technology as a way to support and extend what’s possible through journalism.

Read more about the application process and eligibility on the scholarship program’s website, and beat that deadline!
